Credits & data sources

Last updated: 12 July 2026

Hanko builds its own catalogue from open data. Factual information — titles, dates, episode counts, staff, identifiers — isn't copyrightable, and we source it from the open datasets below. Descriptions, our genre taxonomy, and recommendations are Hanko's own work, written from those facts.

Open data we build on

Seeded our anime catalogue's original facts (titles, types, episode counts, seasons, synonyms) and the cross-source ID map. A frozen bootstrap — new titles now arrive via our own pipeline. Commercial use is expressly permitted by the licence.

The backbone of our own pipeline: new-title discovery, anime & manga facts (premiere and publication dates, formats, release statuses, studios), characters and their cast, streaming-service identifiers, and cross-references.

WikipediaCC BY-SA — used for facts only

We extract factual premises (setting, premise, characters) to ground our own original descriptions. We never copy Wikipedia's prose — facts themselves aren't copyrightable.

Japanese TV programme listings powering our independent airing-schedule pipeline — broadcast dates and times are public facts.

An open cross-reference map between Japanese TV listing IDs and AniList/MyAnimeList IDs, used by the airing pipeline to match broadcasts to titles.

And the rest is ours

The machine that puts it all together is Hanko Actions — our own data pipeline. It discovers new titles every week, banks every fact with its licence attached, writes original descriptions from those facts, classifies tags, mirrors covers, and builds the airing schedule from public broadcast data. When the report button on a title page flags something wrong, the same pipeline regenerates it. No scraping, no rented databases — the open sources above, plus our own machinery.
